Our story
“Can we fix that?”
“Yes, we can.”Porter and his dad, Monte Carroll
Monte Carroll, Shauna's dad, grew up in Pleasant View. He became a union journeyman plumber and backflow specialist, and he taught at Ogden Technical College and Salt Lake Community College. On Saturdays his kids went along on jobs with him, or helped with repairs around the house. That's how he taught us.
In the homes he worked in, Monte saw that many older homeowners needed more than a plumbing repair. They needed a light bulb changed, a door realigned, or small changes that helped them stay in their homes as they aged.
When Seth and Shauna bought their first home, Monte taught Seth how to lay tile, replace doors and run trim. Those projects are where the plans for this business began.
Shauna's brother Porter idolized his dad. We all did. When Porter was three or four, he became obsessed with a cartoon handyman and carried a tool everywhere. He would look up at Dad and ask, “Can we fix that?” And Dad would say, “Yes, we can.” He said it to all of us, about anything we tried.
Monte passed away while working as a facilities maintenance manager, before this part of the story. We named our company after his words. His integrity, and his belief in teaching people to repair and change their own homes, is what this Learning Center is built on.
Why lessons instead of repairs?
Utah law doesn't allow handymen to replace plumbing or electrical fixtures like faucets, toilets, light fixtures and ceiling fans. As the homeowner, you're allowed to do that work on your own home.
So we come to you with the tools and the know-how, and Seth walks you through it step by step, in person, while you do the work. You save the cost of a plumber or electrician on the small jobs, keep that money for the jobs that really need one, and you know how to do it next time.
